first draft

My original idea was also to do a series of illustrations on sister-sister relationships. However, instead of having each picture be just one illustration, each picture would consist of three. The first would be the actual situation; i.e. a sister stealing another sister's shirt, or one sister getting a good grade, or walking into a classroom on the first day of school and having the teacher say "I've had your sister in class before!" Then the second image would be of the reaction that I often find myself having (the negative, petty reaction). The third image is how I'm striving to react to this situations now that I'm all old and wise and such.

I really didn't connect to this idea. It felt as though I was shoving something in people's facing. For lack of better words, I felt "teach-ey" and like a total know-it-all. The truth is, I'm still figuring out this entire sister-sister thing, and I didn't want my illustrations to come across as fake as I felt.

When I brought this draft into full class workshop, I shared these concerns with my peers and my professor, Shelley, and they came up with the idea to have the illustrations connect with my actual repurposing story. I went home that same day and brainstormed how I could make up little illustrations to go along with my words, and the ideas just flowed. It felt much more natural, and when things feel more natural, they usually turn out better.
